Debi Starnes has owned and operated Sugar Magnolia Bed and Breakfast in Atlanta for over 20 years. When not busy with her Atlanta business, Debi Starnes enjoys boating and together with her husband recently completed the Great Loop, a route that encompasses the entire eastern region of the United States and portions of Canada. For those who take on the challenge of the Great Loop, it can be helpful to keep these tips in mind:
- Consult with charts: No matter your level of experience, it is important to bring charts with you on your voyage. Charts are not only good for direction but also provide useful information, such as water depths and the location of marinas for overnight docking.
- Choose your vessel wisely: Be sure to choose a boat or vessel that you feel confident handling and that’s comfortable for the length of your trip. Though some navigate the Loop in a single, long trip, many others navigate the loop piece by piece over a span of years and so use smaller vessels not meant for long-term living. The vessel you choose should reflect your travel plans.
- Understand the route: Great Loop travelers encounter multiple climate zones and must be prepared to deal with unexpected weather, differing depths of rivers, and hot or cold temperatures, depending on the time of year. Be sure to stock up on supplies accordingly and stay aware of weather patterns.
